Au moment où le projet impérial français se transforme en un système colonial établi sur des paradigmes idéologiques et des modèles économiques bien différents des imaginaires et des pratiques culturelles et politiques qui avaient soutenu le succès des premières expériences françaises en Amérique, les autorités coloniales du royaume ressentent, à l’articulation donc des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, la nécessité de recouvrir l’abandon de cet idéal par une propagande qui laisserait penser leur survivance dans le nouveau monde pourtant racialisé et brutal du colonialisme tel qu’il se déploie aux Antilles et en Louisiane. Au cœur de cette entreprise, l’imaginaire de l’alliance est doté d’une publicité dont on espère les charmes capables d’occulter le renoncement aux discours fraternels entretenus traditionnellement avec les Amérindiens, de couvrir d’un voile vertueux les nouveaux appétits économiques et fonciers qui scellent du sang des autochtones l’entrée de la France dans la colonisation, ou, à défaut, de rendre évidente et nécessaire la transformation de la rhétorique de l’alliance au regard de la mauvaise volonté manifeste des autochtones comme des risques pesant sur la communauté française exposée à la menace de sa dissolution. Se réalise ici un formidable subterfuge dans lequel les réalités cruelles de la colonisation française sont justement celles mises en scène pour dénoncer et condamner l’injustice et l’illégitimité des concurrents anglais et espagnols du royaume. Cette nouvelle rhétorique coloniale trouve l’une de ses plus belles expressions dans une superbe carte de 1740 que je me propose d’étudier et dans laquelle l’économie de l’alliance impériale sert de masque à un colonialisme poussant l’audace jusqu’à prétendre même qu’il bénéficie du consentement des Amérindiens qu’il s’emploie pourtant à repousser de son horizon politique et à exclure de son champ d’expériences.

In the investigation of early modern race currently underway within the field of seventeenth-century French literary studies, scholars are primarily focused on the growth of racial thought within France´s fledgling Caribbean plantation colonies and the larger Atlantic World.  While this new line of critical inquiry is eminently salutary, its focus on nascent Atlantic slavery tends to obscure early modern France´s long-standing, continuing experience of servitude in the Mediterranean.  Drawn from an article in the forthcoming collective work, Slavery, Literature and Emotions in the Johns Benjamins series A Comparative Literary History of Modern Slavery, this brief intervention will hope to provide a useful pre-history to the ongoing study of the racialization of slavery by arguing that the enslavement of Frenchmen in the Mediterranean overshadowed the French enslavement of sub-Saharan Africans in the Atlantic World in the French cultural imagination until well into the eighteenth century. To illustrate the glacial pace of this shift from a Mediterranean to an Atlantic regime of slavery within the French cultural imagination, I will rapidly compare known statistics of French enslavement in the Mediterranean to figures of sub-Saharan African enslavement in French New World slave colonies. This comparison will show that a demographic tipping point between French enslavement in the Middle Sea and French slaving in the Atlantic had already been reached as early as the 1650s; nonetheless, French enslavement in the Mediterranean would continue to loom larger than sub-Saharan Atlantic slavery in early modern French cultural productions until the mid-1700s. In sum, the transition from Mediterranean to Atlantic slavery was an eminently complex phenomenon characterized by both a rapid demographic tipping point and a slow transition in the symbolic realm, with the latter overshadowing the former.

Entre 1679 et 1680, Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, comtesse d’Aulnoy, entreprend un séjour en Espagne dont elle tire sa Relation du Voyage d’Espagne (1691). La réalité-même de ce voyage et les anecdotes relatées semblent souvent s’apparenter aux contes de fées pour lesquels Aulnoy est restée célèbre. Cependant, le public de la conteuse dévore avec enthousiasme et confiance cet aperçu dépaysant de la culture espagnole qui donne fréquemment l’occasion à des comparaisons favorables à la France. Mêlant considérations pratiques du voyage, anecdotes dramatiques et stéréotypes exotiques sur les Espagnols, comme la corrida ou la passion pour les duels, ce récit épistolaire en quinze lettres décrit aussi de manière détaillée le fonctionnement de la société espagnole et de son gouvernement, sur le territoire espagnol comme dans les colonies des Indes Occidentales (ou Antilles espagnoles). Cette communication montrera comment, en utilisant le prisme de la société espagnole, Aulnoy remet en cause et critique l’entreprise coloniale dans les Antilles. J’étudierai d’abord la manière dont les objets importés des colonies (vaisselle, bois, toile) participent à l’exotisme espagnol et soutiennent la somptuosité européenne. Ensuite, je comparerai le caractère utopique des Indes représentées par Don Augustin Pacheco (lettre XIV) à l’exposé pragmatique de la narratrice, qui souligne les malversations et l’exploitation économique et humaine. Finalement, je me concentrerai sur la représentation des habitants des colonies et en particulier du personnage de la géante des Indes, chargée de distraire et amuser la reine-mère (lettre XIV), afin de mettre en évidence la stratégie énonciative par réflexion d’Aulnoy, qui cultive l’ambiguïté et évite de prendre position directement par rapport à la question coloniale.

The early modern period was marked by a rapidly globalizing world that brought diverse groups of human beings into contact as never before. Though questions about “differences among men” are as old as humanity itself, scientific and popular curiosity around the cause behind skin color diversity and other distinguishing physical traits that would make up what would come to be called “race” by the 1680s, took on new urgency in the European seventeenth century thanks to the circulation of persons—by choice and by force—across the Atlantic. Over the course of the seventeenth-century, as France joined other European nations in the capture, purchase, and transport of Sub-Saharan Africans to its burgeoning plantation colonies in the Caribbean, and as new communities of persons of European, African, and Caribbean origin developed in the French Antilles, the political and economic importance of establishing categories of difference between these groups became increasingly urgent. Rape of African women by white Frenchmen and sexual relations between French men and women and African-born men and women literally gave birth to new category of “gens de couleur” or “mulatres,” skin-color functioning as the prime indicator of what was cast by Jesuit missionaries as the transgression of inter-racial sexuality. In the seventeenth century, medical and popular understandings of the production of skin color and other physical traits in children still frequently invoked the power of the maternal imagination. Stories of black babies born to white women and white babies born to black women found themselves repeated among other “monstrous” births in medical treatises and literary sources from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. The pregnant woman was thought capable of imprinting the fetus she carried with the strong desires, terrors, or images she experienced. Intense gazing upon a person, object, or painting could cause that image—or color—to be reproduced upon the soft body of the fetus she carried through the workings of her powerful feminine imagination. In this contribution, I propose to consider the arc of this theory’s popularity in relationship to larger colonial concerns over the effects of “misplaced” desire and new questions about sexuality, reproduction, and skin color being asked as the French engaged with ever greater intensity in the Atlantic slave trade and the development of plantation colonies fueled by the labor of captive black Africans, labor both economic and reproductive. Though analysis of medical and missionary texts, as well as legal documents, I will examine how increasing skepticism about the influence of the maternal imagination intersects with rising concern about inter-racial sexuality in the Caribbean.
