In The Decline and Fall Edward Gibbon mentions one “somewhat too naked” fragment of  Anecdota that was “suppressed by Allemanus”(1), i.e. by a Roman antiquarian Nicolò Alemanni who prepared the first edition of Procopius’ notorious work (published in 1623). The nakedness in question refers both to the Empress Theodora state of undress (supposedly she started her career as a circus performer), and to historian’s candid representation of it. This ‘too naked’ passage remained unpublished till the beginning of the 18th century, and thus became a valuable object of scholarly exchange. As such it constitutes a perfect example of ‘secret knowledge’ – a hidden excerpt from an ancient text that is available only to the initiated. The traces of its circulation can be found throughout the 17th century, and for a long time the idea that ‘there could be more’ haunted the scholars’ imagination. The censuring of Procopius’ text and the clandestine circulation of its pieces had unexpected political implications. For instance, Rubens learned about “il supplemento d’alcune lacune nelle editione della storia anechdota de Procopio”(2) in 1629, while he was on a diplomatic mission in England. His French correspondents, Peiresc and the Dupuy brothers, treated his comment about Anecdota as an important request which they tried to fulfill before the English antiquarians could step in. In my paper I would like to focus on the interplay between the object (i.e. the actual piece of Procopius’ text) and the subject (i.e. the naked Empress) of this exchange.

In a classic study of the famous Jesuit Relations, Lawrence C. Wroth described how missionaries collected information about New France and its Indigenous inhabitants and then transmitted it to French readers: “reports in the form of letters or journals, coming fresh from the field of action” were sent each year to Quebec, where “The Canadian Superior…edited the original reports, removing portions here, altering the language there, and welding the several pieces before him into a concise and comprehensive story of the year’s mission in Canada before sending to the French provincial in Paris the composite Relation thus formed” (Wroth, “The Jesuit Relations from New France,” 117-118). This paper examines little-remarked aspects of the circulation of information between Frances New and Old that do not conform to Wroth’s summary above. This includes cases in which news from isolated corners of New France reached France before being forwarded to the mission headquarters in Quebec, due to the challenges of communication within the colony, and cases in which portions of the Relations—or even entire installments in the series—were written in Paris instead of in Quebec. Such cases, I argue, suggest that the creation of France’s knowledge of the colony and the mission was both less linear and more collaborative than scholars have tended to suggest, involving writers and editors at home on both sides of the Atlantic. This insight suggests we might profitably consider the relationship between France and Quebec during the seventeenth century as one between two poles of French culture in dialogue with each other, instead of centre and periphery, metropole and colony, exploiter and exploited.

Nous proposons d’examiner de quelle façon la Gazette burlesque de Loret, qui prendra plus tard le titre de Muse historique, facilite la diffusion de l’information entre 1650 et 1665. En effet, peu après l’arrestation des princes, l’auteur rédige une première épître en vers dans le but de divertir Melle de Longueville, fille du duc et future duchesse de Nemours. Il poursuivra son entreprise, semaine après semaine, jusqu’à sa mort. Bien entendu, la publication des nouvelles par Loret n’a, à cette époque, rien d’original car, le relâchement de la censure pendant la Fronde rend possible la multiplication des gazettes. Cependant, contrairement à la Muse, aucune ne survit bien longtemps. Nous étudierons en premier lieu le choix et la sélection des nouvelles effectués par Loret, ainsi que les stratégies auxquelles il lui faut sans cesse recourir pour parvenir à informer ses lecteurs. Il doit effectivement avoir connaissance de toutes les rumeurs, assister aux spectacles, messes, cérémonies, etc. Il bat donc le pavé chaque jour pendant des heures, ce qui rend impossible pour Scarron, par exemple, de l’imiter. Ce dernier, ayant tenté de publier à son tour une gazette, doit rapidement renoncer à ce projet. Souvent aussi, Loret emprunte à Renaudot les événements qu’il compte rapporter. Nous nous interrogerons ensuite sur les raisons du succès de ces épîtres burlesques, un succès indiscutable dans la mesure où, les copies se multipliant, Loret doit rapidement demander un privilège. Cette gazette, destinée tout d’abord au cercle restreint de Melle de Longueville, voit alors son public s’élargir. Loret est de plus heureux de compter, comme il le rappelle si souvent, le roi et la reine parmi ses lecteurs, et tous les nobles du royaume sont ravis de voir leurs noms mentionnés dans les épîtres. Enfin, nous montrerons la place de Loret dans la diffusion des nouvelles de son époque et la portée historique de son œuvre. Chacune des informations contenues dans ses lettres sont en effet d’une très grande richesse et nous permet de revoir ou de nuancer notre conception du XVIIe siècle. Parmi les thèmes traités, figurent en effet de nombreux épisodes de la Fronde ou des témoignages sur les différentes guerres. Tout ce qui est relatif au rayonnement de la France sous Louis XIV y apparaît de la même façon. Enfin, ce sera le regard d’un contemporain sur plusieurs grands événements, comme l’affaire Fouquet, qui nous importera.
