My Service Learning Journal

In this entry I will be focusing on personal growth and how my team and myself show strengths in each of the seven C’s of leadership, and where I need to improve while working with my non-profit organization. The organization I am working with is Distributed Proofreaders with this organization you work individually and check over others work creating one group per book that is proofreading for publishing online. Each person has to go through the seven C’s and asses how they work together individually and in our “team”. First we have the individual values of Consciousness of Self, Congruence, and Commitment. Consciousness of Self is awareness of beliefs, emotions, and taking action to motivate ones self as a team we each have to look at our motives and beliefs for working with our non-profit and motivate ourselves individually to keep working. Congruence is thinking, feeling, and behaving with authenticity,  this means when we are proof reading we do not slack or give more work to others we are authentic and take credit for any mistakes we made. Commitment is the motivational energy to serve, we all have to be committed to helping and stay committed. Secondly we have the group values of Collaboration, Common Purpose, and Controversy with Civility. Collaboration is working together with others for a common effort, when we split up the proof reading we are all working together to achieve one goal. Common Purpose is working with shared aims and values, each person on my team is wanting to get as much material out there in the world that is readily available giving us our common purpose. Controversy with Civility is recognizing differing opinions and using constructive and supportive statements to work things out, each of us leave notes for the last person who edited before us to help them learn from their mistakes but also pointing out where they did good to keep them motivated to also critique my work and help us improve as a whole unit. Lastly we have societal values, this is Citizenship. With Citizenship you become a collective group that is part of something bigger in a community and society, we are pushing to release more books for free to society thus increasing the ability for others to further their creative minds. After assessing how my organization works as a team and how we all contribute to the seven C’s of leadership I have noticed that as an individual I can work on ability to have Controversy with Civility I grew up in sports so I am not the best at listening to multiple opinions or speaking my own and having them actually listened to but being in this class and environment I have been able to slowly improve on this skill. My three major takeaways from my organizations leadership are how they support a group environment yet are still very involved, they truly have a societal standpoint in their citizenship section of the social change model, and how easy they are to contact.
