What can Bolman & Deal's 4 Frames teach us?

Journal 4: Organizational Analysis

Bolman and Deal’s Human Resources Frame has helped me understand the operational focus my volunteering would take at Hope Helps. As I volunteer more, it occurs to me that this food pantry would not operate without volunteers. Particularly, the idea of the Human Resources Frame caught my interest since I was aware of how Hope Helps is associated with very compassionate and loving groups of volunteers. I was eager to know how they make sure these individuals get what they need from the organization and since Hope Helps is pretty professional about the image they portray to the people that come visiting the food pantry and the thrift store. They, therefore, carefully ensure that people get a good first impression of the organization. This is the reason before ever volunteering for Hope Helps, they have you report to an entirely dedicated day to onboarding. Here, they will extensively explain all you need to know about the organization and how good a volunteer needs to interact with others. This measure ensures that the organization meets all the volunteer’s needs at once and enables the volunteer to do the same likewise because they will have an easy time in distressing situations. This, in turn, improves the pantry’s speed and effectiveness and makes the people that come to the pantry happier. The onboarding day for volunteers is perhaps the most important to get the right type of volunteers and ensure that they have a great time spending time with Hope Helps.

Switching to Bolman and Deal’s Political Frame. Hope Helps maintains a strong relationship with their volunteers which increases the amount of volunteers that come back for more shifts, and to ensure that the number of volunteers stay high, they must maintain a good and fast approach when it comes to volunteer-staff relations. For example a new volunteer comes along and they love the environment so much that they decide to bring their family to volunteer with them, increasing the number of volunteers that Hope Helps have. In addition, the organization has managed to maintain a strong rapport with their sponsors in the Orlando area. For the last couple of yars that I have been volunteering ay Hope Helps, Orlando Health and other organizations sponsoring the Hope Helps have made a very big difference in the way our Back-to-School Bash fundraiser event. They helped provide school supplies to kids in need before school starts.  Hope Helps has thus not only maintained a close relationship with its volunteers but also works to  form a strong network within the community.

As mentioned before, the structural model of Hope Helps’ operations is highly dependent on volunteers, with only a core group of individuals and staff taking part in actually running the food pantry on an everyday basis. This organizational decision is not random – instead, it is meant to make the work of the organization more vibrant. In fact, according to the reviews on Google Maps about Hope Helps, a common point is the impression one gets from the volunteers. For example, one user said that, “The organization is staffed by friendly and compassionate volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of others. Additionally, the organization has a strong reputation for being efficient and effective in providing assistance to those who need it most. Love this place ❤️ 💕 .. Thanks for the helping hand.” . The benefit of this approach for Hope Helps is obvious in the relationship sphere, as positive impressions are what guarantee that a person will return. Clearly, by organizing the work in this fashion, Hope Helps guarantees that people who have positive experiences that resonate with them come to the support of the organization. Precisely, the use and reliance on volunteers shows the organization’s desire to create a community and a space for the people who need help, ensuring their success.

My Insight

Insight: Whenever you see a successful organization, someone once made a courageous decision.
