My Career Ready Portfolio

My leadership philosophy is based on my four core beliefs relating to leadership which are positive attitude, communication, responsibility and confidence. All of these beliefs have been established throughout my life, the way I was raised had a lot to do with these core beliefs and the environment that I grew up in as well. I grew up with two immigrant parents who had a very autocratic leadership style. Although this has many pros and taught me to be the person I am today I believe as a result of my upbringing there are better ways to lead. My parents didn’t establish good communication with me, what they said went. This is what led me to establish one of my core beliefs which is communication. Communication is very important when being a leader because the people who follow you want to know why they should be following you. With the basis of good communication, you can establish trust in your followers and ensure that they are doing everything correctly without causing fear. Having trust between your followers and your followers trusting the leader is very important on leading a group of people. Attitude is also very important when being a leader because if you have a bad attitude your followers will as well. If you have a very good and upbeat attitude whenever walking into the room, it’s likely that your followers will follow you. Personally, whenever I walk into a room for example in one of my classes and the teacher is automatically tired and doesn’t want to teach it makes me not want to learn versus when a teacher has a very positive attitude about what they’re teaching it makes me want to learn more. I also think responsibility is very important as a leader. It is important to take responsibility for your own actions as it helps a person mature and shows your followers that you were able to take responsibility and admit when you were wrong. The last core belief I have is confidence. As a leader you want to be the most confident person out there so your followers will have trust and want to learn from you. If you don’t have confidence your followers will not have confidence in you. I can best contribute to a team by communicating my goals and ensuring that as a team we have a common goal that we want to achieve. The seven C’s of social change is part of the Higher Education Research Institute, 1996 and includes consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship. My philosophy relates the seven C’s of social change model of leadership development because it shows commitment with a common purpose and being able to collaborate with others. Without collaboration and communication chaos will errupt. Having a common purpose as a leader can help organize your group and help reach a common goal.
