My Service Learning Journal

How did I connect with others who serve this cause or population?

Networking to me is all about getting to know people you would not normally engage with if not in a particular setting. I see it as an opportunity to get to work with others via referrals or connections. I found that for me this part of the process was very unique because it was more about the group of volunteers, I met along the way that I felt was most valuable. At Children’s Home Society, the volunteers along with the person in charge of them are the people I mostly interacted with. I was able to meet some amazing new friends because of the common interest in supporting this organization. These relationships lead me to other opportunities to get involved in and use it to support my interest in working with children. I am grateful for the time we spent together publicizing the donations needed and the mission of the organization CHS. We were able to get more interest as a group than if I were doing it alone. The volunteer coordinator was so helpful and kind but frankly was always really busy with other things but was able to connect me to activities and other volunteer events that helped me make valuable connections. One such contact was able to direct me to other events they were doing which was directly aligned to work I am interested in doing in my career goals. So, for me, the beauty of networking is an opportunity to do things that you may not have encountered for it was not because of meeting other people and sometimes in places you would never have imagined you could. After doing these volunteer hours with like-minded people I truly enjoyed the group of people I met during this time and plan to continue to work with them in other capacities.

Insight #5: Seize the moment to meet other people in places you would not think matters because it may be the next big opportunity waiting for you.
