JOURNAL 2: EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND ADVOCACY
Dayron Rojas
As a Regional Organizer within Rhizome, I conduct weekly outreach campaigns targeting educators across South Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia in an effort to recruit high school students into our Fellowship program. Since its inception, I have been an integral part of Rhizome, consistently promoting its mission and values.
The message I share, which is utilized by all our organizers, aims to inform educators about the diverse opportunities available through our program. These include civic learning initiatives, dynamic community empowerment events, visits to K-5 classrooms, and comprehensive voter registration and education efforts. Our primary focus is on reaching underserved communities, particularly those with high populations of Black and People of Color (POC) students and those in lower socioeconomic brackets.
My ultimate objective is to expand the reach of this opportunity to more high school students, providing them with access to resources and experiences they may not typically have access to. By doing so, we aim to empower these students to become active participants in their communities and to seize opportunities for growth and advancement.
Hello Ms. Hayes,
My name is Dayron, and I’m a sophomore in at the University of Central Florida, studying Management. I’m writing on behalf of Rhizome, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that equips local students to become community leaders and create the safer, happier, and healthier world we want to live in.
I am reaching out to ask if you can 1) meet for 15 minutes or 2) take 30 seconds to connect your students with our Civic Service Fellowship by forwarding our info and mentioning it in person! My preference would be to talk with you directly, but I’m sure you are already very busy. I’m passionate about civic engagement and service because of my immigrant and latino background.
Can you help by meeting with me or briefly sharing our invite with all students in your classes or clubs? If so, here’s the language you can copy and paste to send to your students:
I’m forwarding you a community service, leadership, and civic engagement opportunity through Rhizome! Rhizome is a nonprofit organization built by and for students, and you can learn about their work and sign-up for their Civic Service Fellowship on their website. Their website includes info on how the Fellowship boosts mental health determinants, leadership skills, and community connectedness while making an impact and receiving service hours. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re interested in civics, service leadership, or learning how to make an impact in our community!
Thank you!
