JOURNAL 1: SERVING A PASSION

Dayron Rojas

My Why:

I chose to align myself with this organization because, in many ways, it feels like my child. While I was just one of the individuals involved in its inception, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to its growth and development over the nearly three years since its establishment. My journey with this organization began when I was a recent high school graduate grappling with some of life’s most challenging moments. I was yearning for a meaningful pursuit to immerse myself in. At the time, I was working full-time as a dog washer, enduring a two-hour commute via the public bus system, all while dedicating over 10 hours per week to nurturing the organization’s growth. Despite feeling adrift in terms of my career path, unbeknownst to me, I had already stumbled upon the vocation I was destined to pursue. My passion lies in collaborating within a team dynamic and providing guidance as a leader. Thus, I made the decision to channel my efforts into this nonprofit.

About Rhizome

The picture above is a picture of our first ever in person retreat in January 2024.

Rhizome a national nonprofit nonpartisan organization launched by 90 co-founders in August of 2021. Our main challenge we address is that young people hold untapped collective power to create the safer, happier, and healthier world they want to live in. We create structures to provide our youth the ability to shape change and lead meaningful lives. We believe there are emerging leaders in nearly every high school across our nation who want to organize and magnify civic engagement. So, our role is to unite youth leaders aroundnd a shared purpose.

Our mission and vision were drafted, iterated, and voted on by our youth organizers who lead our systems. Our mission is to activate young peoples’ identities into action and help youth treat civic service as the work of a lifetime. We envision a world where all young people can look towards a hopeful future carved from the tools of determination and civic engagement, where communities come tighter to celebrate their differences, and where the youth of today can feels inspired in a producitive and safe space.
