What can Bolman & Deal's 4 Frames teach us?

Instructions: Use two of Bolman and Deals four frames or “lens” to explore the dynamics you have observed or experienced while serving at your nonprofit organization. For instance, how are operational issues or concerns over power, conflict, or leadership addressed by organizational leaders?

Bolman and Deal’s structural and human resource frames help leaders navigate a nonprofit’s power dynamics and operational issues. It is important to clarify roles and procedures for smooth operations in the structural frame. For example, leaders facing budget constraints establish clear financial protocols and streamline processes. It is also possible for them to reorganize teams in order to mitigate conflicts. According to the human resource framework, people are of utmost importance. To empower employees and reduce power imbalances, leaders invest in training. In order to promote transparency, they facilitate open communication through coaching and mediation to resolve conflicts. When leaders are able to integrate both approaches, they are able to address operational challenges as well as human dynamics at the same time. It is critical to have clear structures and streamlined processes to ensure efficient operation, while a healthy work environment is fostered by a focus on employee development and conflict resolution.
