Leadership and Service During Ramadan at ISCF

As Ramadan approaches, bringing with it a time of reflection, community, and spiritual rejuvenation, my involvement with the Islamic Society of Central Florida (ISCF) takes on a new dimension. This year, my family has undertaken the responsibility of catering for Masjid Al-Malik throughout Ramadan, an initiative that not only underscores our personal commitment but also reflects the core values and leadership dynamics within ISCF. This journal entry evaluates the leadership of ISCF, with a special focus on this period, through the Social Change Model of Leadership Development’s “7C’s”: Consciousness of Self, Congruence, Commitment, Collaboration, Common Purpose, Controversy with Civility, and Citizenship.

Consciousness of Self

The preparation for Ramadan has heightened my consciousness of self, pushing me to reflect on my values, beliefs, and the role I play within my community. This self-awareness is mirrored in the leadership of ISCF, which consistently demonstrates a deep understanding of the community’s needs, especially during this holy month.

Congruence

The congruence between ISCF’s values and its actions becomes particularly evident during Ramadan. The organization’s mission to serve and unite the Muslim community is brought to life as we prepare to feed over 250 people nightly. This effort aligns perfectly with the principles of Ramadan, showcasing leadership that practices what it preaches.

Commitment

Our family’s commitment to catering for the mosque every night of Ramadan reflects the broader commitment seen within ISCF’s leadership. This dedication to service is a testament to the organization’s commitment to fostering a supportive and vibrant community, especially during such a significant time.

Collaboration

Collaboration is a key aspect of our Ramadan preparation. Working alongside ISCF leaders, volunteers, and community members, the effort to provide Iftar meals is a collective endeavor that embodies the spirit of collaboration. This joint effort not only enhances the sense of community but also amplifies the impact of our service.

Common Purpose

The common purpose shared by ISCF’s leadership and volunteers is vividly showcased during Ramadan. Our united goal to support the fasting members of our community through our catering service exemplifies a shared vision that drives all our efforts, emphasizing the power of a unified purpose in achieving meaningful outcomes.

Controversy with Civility

While planning and executing such a large-scale service project, differing opinions and challenges are inevitable. ISCF’s leadership excels in handling these situations with civility, encouraging open dialogue and respect for diverse perspectives. This approach ensures that even in times of disagreement, the focus remains on our common goal.

Citizenship

The concept of citizenship is deeply ingrained in ISCF’s activities during Ramadan. Through our service, we not only contribute to the well-being of our immediate community but also embody the principles of social responsibility and active citizenship, reinforcing the importance of giving back and supporting one another.

Conclusion

Reflecting on my experiences with ISCF during the preparation for Ramadan, three major insights about the organization’s leadership have emerged. Firstly, the alignment of values and actions, particularly during such a critical period, underscores the importance of congruence in effective leadership. Secondly, the collective effort to cater for the mosque highlights the power of collaboration and common purpose in achieving significant community goals. Lastly, the dedication and commitment displayed by everyone involved, from planning to execution, exemplify the profound impact of united community service on social change.

As we approach Ramadan, my anticipation grows not only for the spiritual renewal the month promises but also for the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to my community through ISCF. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of effective leadership but also reinforced my commitment to service and community engagement.
