Introduction

This book was crafted by a team of experts led by  Dr. Jacqueline Flores-Otero, Clinical Associate Professor of Anatomy and the course instructor of the Neuroplasticity of Human Movement course. Alongside her, adjunct faculty members and Associate Instructional Designers of Personalized Adaptive Learning collaborated with a dedicated graphic artists team and graduate students from the University of Central Florida’s School of Kinesiology – Division of Physical Therapy, Main Campus.

In the following chapters, we aim to impart knowledge to students regarding the fundamental components of the nervous system, with a particular focus on the central nervous system. We delve into how the brain dynamically adapts to both internal and external stimuli, thereby influencing neuronal function and, consequently, human behavior. Our overarching objective is to illuminate not only the natural changes the brain undergoes during development and aging but also its remarkable capacity for rewiring following various circumstances such as accidents, traumatic events, or the rehabilitation process for individuals experiencing loss of upper or lower limb function.

An exceptional aspect of studying Neuroplasticity is the realization that each of us possesses the ability to harness our senses to enhance brain function, potentially staving off the onset of neurodegenerative diseases to which we are all susceptible. Through deliberate adjustments to our lifestyle, dietary choices, thoughtful and behavioral actions, and daily routines, we can actively promote the formation of new neuronal connections that improve our quality of life in a myriad of ways. These connections are strengthened through repetitive and stimulating experiences, thus empowering us to optimize brain health and resilience over time.
