The advocacy message I want to share out is under the main idea of unleashing the power of mapping for a connected world.

My name is Nadine Alur I am doing online service hours with an online mapping agency called Online Street Mapper. Our mission is to “create a complete map of the world by sharing the power of online mapping”. The problem in the world is that many roads, buildings, and areas in general are uncharted and many people don’t know how to get places and their geography of their community. With this online serving site it allows anyone to contribute in making a difference by charting these points on a world view map that is accessible to anyone and everyone. By mapping buildings and roads this will in turn create a full mapped out community and bring the global community together. I developed this message by thinking of the common goal the service site and I shared. While mapping buildings and roads I was able to gain more insight on the geography of the world and learn more about growing communities. I was also able to learn about the disasters going on around the world including recent earthquakes and hurricanes that changed the geography of the world, and my job was to re-map these areas so the people of the community can have access and see what has changed and what has stayed the same.

Some of the ways mapping the world will help create a better more connected community is by empowering local communities. Accurate maps provide important information for local development and disaster response. By mapping areas that have undergone disasters it allows communities to make informed decisions that can impact the wellness of the community. It enhances international collaboration and trade by mapping uncharted areas. By mapping you are also promoting technological advancements because online mapping uses a GPS navigation system that provides satellite imaging.

Here’s 3 things you can do to assist us:

  1. Get involved, it is free and open to everyone. All you have to do is search up the website openstreetmap.org to get started.
  2. Learn how to map areas, the website can teach you this or you can simply look up a video on YouTube how to do it. It is fairly easy but important you understand how to fully do it so you don’t provide wrong information to the community.
  3. Spread the word! The more people who know about this site the more people that can help.

Thank you for caring about the community, join the movement, together we can map a brighter future.

Sincerely,

Nadine
