Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy stems from the idea that a leader is only as good as those who follow them. I believe that helping build people up in an area they value is the best way to have a coherent and efficient team. While a leader may have the final say on team decisions, the input and work the rest of the group puts in is just as valuable. When I am in leadership positions, I try to make others feel comfortable to explore their area of study and confident enough to grow in their position by taking risks knowing I will support them. I do not believe people can do their best work when they don’t feel supported by the leader and the rest of the team. I try to keep this in mind when leading and address it by creating a positive environment and giving people the space to ask questions, try new things, and bring up suggestions. I enjoy receiving feedback on my leadership style because it makes me feel more accomplished when I can say that the people I am leading are content with my work. Without taking criticism I would never get to a place as a leader where everyone feels supported and valued on the team. However, I feel motivated when my team supports me as well. I am still learning how to be a good leader and I will still need help and feedback as I develop my leadership style completely. Without the reciprocated support from my team, I will not have the space to grow into a good leader. As I move to new roles and new leadership positions, I must be willing to change with my team. I do not believe I will ever perfect my leadership style because situations are always changing and a good leader should always be willing to adapt to the needs of the group.
