My Service Learning Journal
Hearts for the Homeless recently had a First Aid Drive among our student volunteers. This was a great idea, but I feel that we could get more donations if we sent some sort of message out to donation areas like local health care clinics and hospitals. Sometimes these materials can get expensive so asking a business/organization of some sort could work in our favor. In the message I crafted, I mentioned the prevalence of the homelessness issue in Orlando, stated a recent trend in the individuals using our services, and provided a way to address the aforementioned issue.
Hello! My name is Joheily Franco, and I am a student volunteer with Hearts for the Homeless Orlando. Ever since the events of the COVID-19 pandemic, the homeless population in Orlando has risen significantly and continues to do so each year. As a nonprofit, our mission is to contribute to the health and wellness of these underserved communities. We accomplish this by providing free blood pressure, EKG, and visual acuity screenings, referrals to free healthcare clinics, educational workshops and more. Another method we utilize to aid the underserved population is donation drives.
Our organization has noticed that many of the clients using our services come in with open wounds, and we want to help them out. We are looking for donations of first aid material of any kind such as bandages, disposable gloves, gauze etc. Any size or quantity of contribution is greatly appreciated. Of course, if you are not able to donate please feel free to spread the word to those who you know are able.
We here at Hearts for Homeless Orlando commend and thank you for your efforts to improve the lives of our citizens in need.
