My Leadership Philosophy – Nivedha Srinivasan
My name is Nivedha Srinivasan, and I am a sophomore studying Biomedical Sciences and minoring in IT and Health Informatics and Information Management. I started college as a pre-medical student but realized that medical school was not the right path for me, as I am much more interested in the technology and inner workings of a hospital, like medical softwares and EHRs. I enjoy working with computers and people, and hope that working in the field of informatics allows for me to bring a positive change to the world around me, especially in developing countries with very little medical knowledge.
A unique aspect of my leadership style is my priority to make people comfortable and safe when they are working with me. I have realized the importance of effective and kind communication to other teammates and coworkers through my many leadership positions, and pride myself on my ability to work as a friend and leader at the same time. I want to leave those that I work with with the knowledge to be a leader themselves, a style of transformational leadership. I like to be honest when it comes to feedback to others, but also find it important to stay respectful. I work best with groups and teams of people, and work well under pressure, as it gives me more motivation. This is because I know that people are dependent on me, making me want to do the best I can. But I also know that I have the ability to depend on others in my team to ensure success in our common goal.
My motivation stems from the idea of making a positive impact in this world, no matter how small or big it may be. My expectations for myself are to do my best. I think that it is really important that I work with my own intrinsic motivation, instead of focusing on others around me and what they are doing instead. This way, I am more focused on my own goals, and work in fields and subjects that truly interest me instead of extrinsic factors. For others, I think it is important for them to have their own definition of success and their own goals that they hope to achieve.
I don’t think that success has a specific definition, because it can mean many different things depending on a person’s perspective. To me, success means to be able to achieve a goal that an individual has been working towards for a long time. Some of these successes won’t come to you without continuous hard work and dedication, and they can take a long time to achieve, but regardless, all the effort you put into achieving your goals will make you feel successful. I best contribute to a team in whichever way is best for the team as a whole, regardless of my own personal interest.
I have learned a lot about the importance of effective communication throughout my personal leadership experiences, especially as a Campus Ambassador, where I am working with many students who come from different backgrounds. It is important for me to make sure that I am able to connect with these students as they want to come to UCF, but need to know about certain things in order to be really convinced. I have learned how there are many different types of leadership styles in my LEAD classes, and that it is important to ensure that you are adapting to each type of situation when it comes to being a leader.
Being conscious of yourself helps with finding your own moral ground, which can help with finding a goal that correctly aligns with your beliefs. These beliefs are important, especially to me, because they are my guiding principles throughout my life. Congruence is important as it aligns with consciousness of self because you need to believe and act on the things that you are working on. Executing the change that I bring to a certain responsibility helps motivate me intrinsically and be much more effective in the long run. Commitment is very important to me as I put all of my effort into the things that I do, whether it be for volunteer or campus involvement. I think it is important to do the things that you enjoy in order to stay committed towards the activity, and really excel in what you do. I think that having a common purpose with those you work with will help when it comes to achieving certain goals. Being able to stay calm under any circumstance and correctly explain your perspective will save time and relationships with other teammates who may have different views than you. Collaboration goes hand in hand with common purpose. I think that it is important to work and collaborate with those who share a common purpose with you in order to further your goals. Being a citizen in your community is important to me personally because I think it’s really important to give back to your community, especially if there is anyone that helped you when you needed assistance before you were a leader.
