Where I am headed? My Career Compass Reflection

After completing the Focus 2 Career Assessment, I received a list of several jobs that may be suited for me based on my preferred work style and my individual values, personality, and skills. The assessment also listed the median salary along with corresponding UCF majors that may help me achieve the specific career goal. The occupation that was most in line with my work style, values, personality, and skills was a Psychiatrist (M.D.). These individuals make around $200,000 a year and are under the job family of healthcare practitioners. Positions as a type of healthcare practitioner were a common trend within my results. This was a relief to see given that I want to pursue a career as a pathologist which is within the realm of healthcare.

Within the Focus 2 Career Assessment, there were five questionnaires that tested my work interest, values, personality, skills, and leisure. The Work Interest assessment provided me with the Holland Code which is a descriptor of my primary interests as it relates to what I enjoy working on. My code was ISE which stands for investigative, social, and enterprising. Because I was labeled as investigative, I realize that I enjoy problem solving that typically involves data analysis like interpretation of formulas and abstract thinking. Additionally, being investigative implies that I also enjoy working independently with minimum supervision. My second interest was socialness meaning I enjoy working with others to solve problems and am very good at expressing myself and maintaining interpersonal relationships. It was interesting to note how different my first and second interests were. I interpreted this stark contrast as my finding enjoyment in working on my own and as a team, but that what I prefer is dependent upon the task. My last interest was enterprising. This signifies that I enjoy persuading others and being in a leadership position to do so. I would say that these descriptions were pretty aligned with how I feel. I enjoy solving problems and analyzing data (which is why I declared Biomedical Sciences as my major), but I also enjoy the social aspect of collaborating with others and holding leadership positions to enact change.

The aim of the leisure assessment was to explore majors and careers that match what I enjoy doing in my leisure time. My code was CIS which stands for correct, inquiring, and sharing. People who enjoy being correct find joy in following a strict routine and are very detail oriented. I was also described as inquiring because I enjoy problem solving and learning new information. This aspect of my leisure description is very aligned with the investigative aspect of my Holland Code. Lastly, I enjoy sharing in my leisure time because I have a passion for helping people in any way I can. The leisure assessment practically describes the result of the true colors assessment I took for my LEAD class. I was primarily gold (detail oriented) with green (problem solving) being my second color. The biggest realization I gained from this assessment is that I tend to take up positions under the realm of sharing/socialness. For example, my positions as a writing center consultant and a wiSTEM mentor require that I use my interpersonal skills to advise others.

Insight: Although I do have a plan for the career I want to pursue in the future, there’s no guarantee that my path won’t change along the way. And that’s okay because there are a variety of jobs available in the medical field.
