Preface

Welcome to my portfolio! My name is Sophia Wuttke and the licensing I will be using is CC BY-NC (Attribution Non-Commercial).

Introduction:

This course has educated me and exposed me to how different contemporary art forms can highlight the effect humans not only have on the environment, but the cohabitation of humans with nature. “Calle 13” is a Puerto Rican, alternative hip-hop band formed by siblings. They named themselves after the street they lived on. Residente, one of the stepbrothers, pursued a degree in design and a master’s in fine arts, illustration, and sequential art and film. This was said to help amplify the songs and productions using the techniques he had studied in school.

Themes:

The themes I chose to represent this portfolio is the power and artistry of music videos used to represent the co-habitancy of humans and nature. An artist that stood out to me specifically in this course is “Calle 13” for their songs that are paired with tasteful music videos that dive into a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between humans and our environment surrounding us in different communities, specifically, the Latinx community.

                             Muerte en Hawaii

Analysis and Application:

Muerte en Hawaii was released November 22, 2010. The point of the video is to add a satirical spin on a real problem that humans created for nature. This image from the music video awakens a perspective in people to get them to understand the effect humans have on not only marine life, but nature as a whole. Reversing the roles is a psychological technique many advocates use to help people see the world in a new, more environmentally pro lifestyle.

                                          Latino America

Analysis and Application:

Latino America was released September 27, 2011. In the same year the song was released, it won record and song of the year. The point of the video is to highlight the social, political, and environmental issues in Latin America. The contemporary art from this video is not only beautiful and creative, but the lyrics lined up with each frame helps reach the audience on a different level. The extortion of money at the stake of our environment is what I am getting from the entirety of this art form.

                                          Atrevete te te

Analysis and Application:

Arevete te te was released November 29, 2005. This song reached number 6 on the top Latin album’s billboard.  The point of the video is to expand the idea that conforming to societal standards affects the way we live our lives, and the impact we have on our environment around us. The casual visual of a man sitting on top of a building playing the clarinet is setting the example of how humans should view life. Enjoying the moment, and not interfering negatively with the environment. The video touches on the importance of a relaxed and non-harmful lifestyle, to avoid the over extortion of our environment to meet the demanding needs of society.
