The World of Land Art by Liana Varnum

Preface

My name is Liana Varnum and my work is called The World of Land Art. The license I will be using for this portfolio is the CC BY-NC-ND. This portfolio focuses on the beauty of nature as well as the freedom of art. These photos showcase how artists use natural resources to create unique designs and structures.

Theme

One theme my portfolio would be addressing is the connection between the freedom of art and nature. With art, any person should have the right to create pieces of art how they would want to. How it’s connected with nature is that any person should have the rights to how they want to live as well as having access to basic needs. This kind of art is really about the experimentation with the designs of art and nature. Another theme this portfolio addresses is being connected with nature. When people go outside, stay active, and engage with the outside world, it can lead to a more peaceful and healthy life. It can also make the person appreciate the natural world around them more.

As you can see in this image, photographer Christopher Damamme, gathered some large stones and placed them in a certain way that created a circular design. It shows that artists can use the natural resources around them to make interesting things.

As for this photo, photographer Mick Haupt also used natural resources to create a unique art design in a different way. The seaweed is composed in a way that creates a movement and leads the viewer’s eye to the ocean. The lighting of the picture gives the seaweed design a good contrast look so it catches the viewer’s attention.

This art installation is actually a public art exhibit called the 7 magic mountains that’s located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The sculptures were created by Ugo Rondinone who said that the meaning behind the art pieces is the “meeting of the artificial and nature”. The traffic, buildings, and lights in Las Vegas are the artificial while the mountains, lakes, and deserts are the nature. Photo was taken by Franz Hajak.

Analysis

Land art (aka Earth art) was a movement that mostly took place in the United States and Great Britain in the 1960s and 70s. It was a trend that used the natural resources of the land to create pieces of artwork within it. The movement was based on the rejection of urban lifestyle, and the commercialization of art in museums and galleries. It brought an ecological movement as people were also concerned about the state of the Earth.

Applicable

As society progresses and develops, people care more about technological and industrial advances and less for the world that they live in. Being distracted by screens and noises, people have a hard time caring about the things that actually matter. It is important to be more inclusive in the outside world because not only is it healthy but people can be more aware about their place on this planet and how their decision can everything else that is here as well.
