The work of Justin Brice Guarigilia uses technology integrated within nature to remind the world that human’s actions have serious consequence. Brice explores the relationship shared between humans and the natural world through contemporary/visual art and sculptures. This portfolio furthers this exploration.
Guarigilia’s works convey two main themes that this project explores further:
1) The Earth is being destroyed
2) Humans are the cause for the Earth’s decay
All of Justin Brice Guarigila’s works convey the relationship between nature and mankind. In his works, mankind is depicted as being the cause for the Earth’s destruction. For example, in one of his works, Guarigilia cleverly altered the well known “Exxon” logo to read “Exxtinction”. This suggest that major corporations and certain industries, such as oil and gas, are extremely destructive and continued practice of them will only lead to extinction of natural environment. This idea is furthered by another one of his works, “We are the Asteroid”. This work suggest that we humans are ‘the asteroid.’ In other words, we humans are a catastrophic, nature ending event. Although most of his work is showcased in exhibits, his works have philosophical backgrounds. For example, the “We Are The Asteroid” series started as a project between Guarigilia and philosopher Timothy Morton. Guarigilia believes philosophy has led to him having a “deeper understanding of human impact on the planet,” and has given him inspiration and reason to create his art. In the future, I think Guariglia’s art will be interpreted as one of the most prominent artistic expressions of Earth’s decay. His work is relatable, using common themes, objects, and logos that people are familiar with. This, coupled with his creativity and strong message, create art that leaves a lasting and inspiring impression on those who view it. This impression will guide people to restore the environment and cement Guarigilia’s work into history.
It is clear why Guarigilia’s work is important: the Earth is dying. Everyday, our natural environment is destroyed more. Most people typically go about their day ignorant to the damages caused by mankind. The work explored in the portfolio serves as a reminder to all individuals that their actions have consequences on the world around us. The art is simple, and uses things that most people are familiar with, allowing for an easy understanding and application to society. The art is also distinct in its length. Guarigilia sometimes uses road signs for his art. These signs will are left displaying their messages for days on end, meaning thousands of passerby view the art on a regular basis. Furthermore, the art is distinct in its use of familiarity. For example, the work “Exxtinction””s similarity to the Exxon logo creates a lasting impression on the viewer. Anytime the viewer sees an Exxon, they are reminded of Guarigilia’s work and his message. This clever use of familiarity allows Guarigilia’s message to have a stronger and longer lasting impression.
