Images/Analysis
This first image, titled “Oceans Biggest Threat?”, uses irony which will firsthand catch the public’s attention. This mural was captivating as it is very simple, but gives a strong message. If you look closely, there are skulls next to all the pieces of trash and a crown above the shark. Not only do people know the answer when they see the image, but the author took the creativity to provide more of an incentive on what is the problem.
Unlike a lot of other murals, this mural is part of a mural project called the Storm Drain Project. Many artists like Donna Bailey go around different cities and make their statements for the general public on these storm drains. This storm drain project arose in 2016 and has only escalated from there. In this project, artists are assigned different drains and will be competing on whose is the best as well as introducing the best message.
This image, similarly to the other ones gives a negative connotation towards how the environment is being treated. There is also irony depicted in this mural as there are vibrant colors and dreamlike imagery, depicting scenes that evoke a sense of nostalgia while also having a big title of “Endless Summer”. Daquella Manera almost wanted to give a sense of eternal frustration of disappointment as a lot of her work is known for its thought-provoking compositions. Creating realism through her work is how she has gained support from her audience and she has created a theme of thought-provoking imagery.
