Day-to-Day Eco-Friendly Coexistence
Angelo Dovas
In our modern world, the importance of coexisting with nature and embracing eco-friendly practices has become increasingly evident. As we witness the consequences of unsustainable practices, such as habitat destruction and pollution in full effect, it becomes imperative for us to reassess our relationship with the natural world. Engaging in eco-friendly coexistence entails adopting a mindset that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living beings and actively working towards preserving and protecting our environment. It involves making conscious choices in our daily lives that minimize harm to nature and maximize the sustainability of our actions. By embracing eco-friendly practices, we not only contribute to the preservation of our planet but also pave the way for a more beneficial and sustainable future for generations to come. With that, this PhotoVoice page conveys this message through the eyes of a good friend of mine–my roommate Brian. Brian took to time to compile three images and responses that convey his takes on the natural world that presents itself to him throughout his daily life. Brian is a third-year college student like myself here at UCF, and he freely consents to share his photos and written statements with me about his perspectives on the environment.
“My Backyard”
“For this first image, I wanted to capture a part of my everyday life in South Florida. “My Backyard,” as depicted, showcases a calm canal that is really in my backyard and further apart of the inter-coastal waterways that define this region of Florida. Although the water may appear murky at first glance, it is thriving with life. This small canal holds hundreds of saltwater fish and other marine species, creating a diverse ecosystem right at my doorstep. The incredible variety of sizes and shapes among the fish is truly remarkable, and it’s not uncommon to witness the occasional manatee wanting to chill out in the calm area. This backyard tends to constantly remind me of the biodiversity and overall privilege of living in this coastal paradise. However, not all has been great as environmental disasters like the red-tide blooms continue to affect this very canal in my backyard. Witnessing that showed me how quickly things can change for the worst, and this recent photo reminds me of the importance of preserving and appreciating the delicate balance of aquatic life that surrounds me at home.” – Brian
Here Brian somewhat reflects on what seasonally happens to his canal as a result of the algal blooms that continue to negatively impact Florida’s marine ecosystems. Algal blooms down in South Florida are primarily caused by a combination of nutrient pollution and favorable environmental conditions. Excess nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus, enter water bodies through various sources such as agricultural runoff, urban stormwater, and wastewater discharges. More notably, the debates surrounding the runoffs from Lake Okeechobee directly revolve around these processes. Essentially, these excess nutrients act as a fertilizer for algae, fueling their rapid growth. When coupled with warm temperatures, stagnant water, and abundant sunlight, the conditions become ideal for algal blooms to occur. In particular, harmful algal blooms like red tide can release toxins that harm marine life and pose risks to human health. The occurrence of algal blooms underscores the importance of effective nutrient management, conservation practices, and wastewater treatment to mitigate nutrient pollution and protect the delicate balance of South Florida’s aquatic ecosystems.
In essence, this is Brian’s point of view with regard to his daily life and how such environmental challenges like algal blooms shape his experience. Living in South Florida over the summer, Brian has witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of algal blooms on the region’s waterways. Evidently, these harmful blooms disrupt the delicate balance of marine ecosystems depicted in his image. Undoubtedly this environmental problem affects both aquatic life and the communities that live on these waters as a collective.
“Work”
“For the second photo, I quickly snapped this photo outside of work because it honestly upset me. It’s understandable that people get caught up in their busy lives and overlook certain things, but what I witnessed here felt like a bit too much. The trash on the floor was particularly upsetting because, to the right of this photo, there is literally a dumpster right there. You asked me for my perspective on the environment/health, and this consists of a photo of what not to do. As a matter of fact, I felt the need to pick this stuff up and throw it away shortly after. I feel like sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands and take action on your own, even if it might not be your fault.” – Brian
With a change of scenery to a more urban area where Brian works, it is evident that the pollution in the form of littering is what caught Brian’s attention here. The thoughtlessness of those who discarded their trash in such a careless manner stands in this image. What strikes Brian the most is the undeniable fact that it wouldn’t have necessarily been an inconvenience to pick up the loose trash and throw it away at the nearby dumpster. The presence of a convenient solution to the litter problem amplifies the frustration and disappointment he feels. It highlights the disregard for the environment and the lack of personal responsibility that can be found in our society. At that moment, Brian becomes aware of the power of individual actions and the need for people to take ownership of their impact on the environment.
This directly relates to the concept of Environmental Justice, (seen in Module 4), “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” The reading also highlights that “proponents of environmental justice generally view the environment as encompassing where we live, work, and play, pray and learn.” In this very instance, Brian’s concern stems from the blatant disregard for the environment in the urban area where he works, reflecting a potential disparity in the application and enforcement of environmental regulations. This takeaway reinforces the importance of striving for effective environmental practices, where everyone has the opportunity to live in a clean and healthy environment, free from pollution and littering.
“On the Road”
“For the last image, I took this photo on my way back up to UCF in Orlando so it has bad quality. At first glance, it might seem like a picture of some power lines, but what caught my attention was how they cut through the forest. Seemingly endless, I like to think of it as these power lines representing the connection between the ever-growing human infrastructure and its impact on nature. I hope this makes people think about considering sustainable approaches that minimize harm to the environment while still meeting our energy needs. To me, this photo depicts the importance of reducing the disruption caused by human structures. Through this picture, I want to encourage people to appreciate how our actions affect nature and find ways to harmonize technology and environmental preservation.” – Brian
Ultimately Brian’s last photo serves as a stark reminder of the interconnectedness between human progress and its impact on the environment. The powerlines stretching into the horizon symbolize the pervasive presence of our infrastructure–which we tend to take for granted in our daily lives. Through this image, Brian prompts us to reflect on the potential consequences of our reliance on such infrastructure and raises crucial questions about the long-term sustainability of our technological advancements. By challenging us to consider how our choices today might shape the environment of tomorrow, Brian’s thought-provoking conclusion implores us to prioritize our responsibilities regarding preserving the environment for the benefit of both present and future generations.
Overall Theme
In conclusion, Brian’s collection of images and statements offers an interesting exploration of the daily human-environmental relationships. His three photos consist of life before algal blooms, urban littering, and the thought-provoking presence of the powerlines. Ultimately, Brian prompts us to reflect on the consequences of our influence as humans and the need for more responsible environmental practices. His work highlights the urgency of fighting pollution no matter the degree, doing more to preserve delicate ecosystems, and striving for environmental justice to be commonplace in society. All in all, Brian’s eye-opening conclusion emphasizes the relationship between humans and the environment, urging us to prioritize sustainability on more of a day-to-day basis for the benefit of current and future generations.
