My name is Kendal Moberg and my Photovoice project is “Noticing the Little Guys”. Kaya Weinstein is my participant. She is 18 years old, has lived in Florida her whole life, and is my roommate. She loves the environment and spending her time outdoors.
I Kaya Weinstein am hereby giving my full consent for the University of Central Florida student, Kendal Moberg, to use any of my documents, photographs, and recordings accumulated and created for the purpose of her Photovoice assignment within the course of Encountering Humanities.
The following images were taken on Kaya’s phone during her nature walk through the nature trail on UCF’s campus.
“These berries were a beautiful color and really grabbed my attention. They were sort of hidden on my walk and I did not notice them at first. I do not know what berries these are and I could not find them on google. I try not to use my phone too much on my nature walks because it takes my attention away from the beauty on the trails.”
– Kaya Weinstein
I agree with Kaya when she talks about not being aware of our surrounding because we are always nose deep in our phones. In the photo you can see that the berries are behind that big leaf making it hard to notice unless you are really observing what’s around you. After reading her statement I think unplugging from technology and noticing the beauty around you is the point of her photo.
“I found this cute little lizard during my walk. I like to think he posed for this photo or that he was sunbathing and trying to catch a tan and I just happened to stumble upon him. His color and design helps him blend in with the tree so at first it was hard for me to notice him. I really like the design on his back, I think it is unique and cool looking”
– Kaya Weinstein
Kaya really captured a beautiful picture. She was able to grab a picture of this lizard who would usually run off if approached but instead stayed and enjoyed this human interaction. I think Kaya’s description of the photo is very imaginative and cute. She really had to be paying attention to see him chilling there and was able to get the perfect picture. She also would of had to of been very careful to not scare him off which shows her gentleness in how she approaches animals and how we should all approach the delicacies of nature.
“Last little guy I found was this bee. Usually I would run if a bee flew at me but he seemed to be minding his own business pollinating that flower and such. It was really cool just watching him do his own thing. He walked around on the leaves for a little bit after I took the picture and flew off after he noticed me standing there. I like to think he spent his whole day pollinating and doing his busy bee duties.”
– Kaya Weinstein
I think this photo is my favorite because it captures the bee in the middle of doing its natural instinctive duty. The bee was just going on about his day and Kaya happened to bump into him. I would like to mention her comment about how she would usually run from the bee if it was flying at her but instead she stayed since he was doing his own thing. I find that sort of poetic. If we leave nature to do its own thing and let it be it will not interfere with our lives. So, why do we as a society feel a constant need to interfere with their lives?
After Reading all of Kaya’s statements and observing her pictures, I think the overall theme is really taking a minute to look for the little things around you. If you do not take a minute to observe the smaller details you are not really taking in and fully enjoying your surroundings.
